SMR Cares Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. It was established by Chris and Matt Farni, the co-founders of Spirit Mountain Recovery, a prominent nationally recognized treatment program for adult men who suffer with Substance Use and Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders since 2016.
The motivating factor for the establishment of SMR Cares Foundation was to set up a separate charitable entity that would provide supplemental financial and other resources to individuals and families who would be otherwise unable to access primary substance use and/or mental health treatment or to engage in outpatient recovery programs.
As part of Chris and Matt’s passionate commitment to supporting individuals and families adversely affected by substance abuse, Spirit Mountain Recovery, contributes 2.5% of its annual revenues to SMR Cares Foundation to assist in the performance of its Mission.
SMR Cares Foundation offers a vital opportunity to address one of the most pressing issues facing our society today – that of substance use addiction and the co-occurring mental health issues that typically accompany it. The SMR Cares Foundation promotes social welfare through targeted initiatives that help the poor, distressed, underprivileged, and disabled who struggle with substance abuse. Our programs are designed to bridge gaps in care and offer sustainable support, making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and their families.
By donating to our cause, you are not just giving money; you are giving a second chance to those in desperate need of substance use addiction treatment. Each contribution helps expand our SMR Cares Foundation’s reach, enhance our programs, and deepen our impact within the communities we serve.
Join us in our mission to transform lives and build healthier futures for all, making a lasting impact that extends beyond individual lives to benefit our society. Your support is not just an act of charity, but an investment in a brighter, healthier future for those less fortunate among us. Those who struggle with substance use addiction and the co-occurring mental health disorders which typically accompanies this affliction.
To ensure that donations for our non-profit, SMR Cares Foundation, are processed correctly and meet IRS standards as outlined in IRS Publication 559 contributors should follow these general steps:
Donors can verify that SMR Cares Foundation is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by making any donor contributions tax deductible under IRC Section 170. Upon request, we will gladly provide you our IRS Non-Profit Tax-Exempt Letter 947 (Rev. 2-2020) effective September 13, 2023. This status makes donations tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Contributors can request our organization's tax-exempt certification or search the IRS website for confirmation. SMR Cares is also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts under Sections 2055,2106 or 2522.
Contributions can be made in various forms such as cash, checks, credit card payments, equipment, real property, or even securities. Donors should consider their financial situation and tax planning needs when deciding the form of their gift.
Once they have decided on the type and form of the donation, donors can proceed by writing a check, authorizing a credit card payment, transferring securities, or using other payment mechanisms provided by our foundation. It’s our goal to ensure that all transactions are done securely and receipts are issued.
As a Donor we suggest that you keep detailed records of your donations. For cash and securities, this includes bank records or written communication from SMR Cares Foundation acknowledging the donation. If the donation is goods or services, a detailed description and a good faith estimate of the value must be documented.
If your donation is $250 or more; the IRS requires you to obtain a written acknowledgment from us. This acknowledgment we send you will state the amount of cash and a description of any property other than cash contributed. If any portion or all of services or goods were received in exchange for something of value, this should also be noted, as only the portion of the donation exceeding the fair market value of the goods/services received is deductible.
When preparing their tax returns, donors should itemize their deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040 if they wish to deduct their charitable contributions. They should consult with a tax professional to ensure that all IRS regulations are met, particularly if large donations or non-cash items are involved.
By following these steps, donors can successfully contribute to SMR Cares Foundation while complying with IRS regulations, ensuring both the donor's and the organization's mutual benefit and legal compliance.
